The Different Types of Acne

by Danna Finnerand

Acne appears when pores and hair follicles become clogged and create sores on the surface of the skin. These lesions can take many forms, including cysts, pimples, blackheads, abscesses, and in some cases even permanent scarring.

Acne is most commonly observed during the adolescent period that is known as puberty. This is when the human organism starts to have big variations in hormone levels as a consequence of the devoloping a grown-up, adult body. Acne can affect both genders of all ages; some people will suffer from acne throughout their complete adult lives.

Pimples inflammation is the most apparent sign in regard to skin appearance. Inflammatory acne can mostly be seen on the face, but there are other spots on the body that can be affected, like the shoulders, chest, scalp, upper arms, back, neck, and legs. The pimple is the most prevalent form of acne. A pimple appears when a pore or hair follicle becomes irritated and develops small red sores on the skin surface. There are some observable symptoms before the blemish is fully formed. These symptoms include closed comedos, open comedos, cysts, and pustules. Blackheads are clogged pores that have a darker color with an opening at the surface of the epidermis. Whiteheads are slightly different in that they don't have an open ended pore. They will commonly turn into pustules if left alone for a couple of days. If the zits are popped or squeezed, they will usually develope a more serious infection and could end up in a scar. So it is a good idea to leave pimples alone.

Inflammatory and non-inflammatory are the major kinds of acne. The non-inflammatory type is divided into two lesser categories: closed and open comedos. A closed comedo is usually called a whitehead and develops on the skin as a small white or yellow bump. The open comedo is usually known as a blackhead.

Pustules are pus filled, discolored sores, and have a yellowish or whitish color. They can form from blackheads or whiteheads. They are round lesions that present inflammation derived from aggravated sebaceous glands. The skin has many sebaceous glands that secrete sebum, an oil-like chemical. When sebum is in contact with the skin for a long time, the pores and hair follicles become irritated and infected. Cysts are larger sores filled with pus that appear on the surface but are in reality in the lower layers of the epidermis.

Whatever kinds of zits or scars there are, you will find a good treatment that is available. Understanding about the different kinds of acne will give the acne sufferer a better chance to find the best treatment product for a particular problem.
