Nail Care Tips for Everyone

by Jen Hopkins

People may seem to think that nail care is not that important when it comes to personal hygiene. On the contrary, it is very important as badly maintained nails do not only look bad, they can also interfere with our everyday tasks. Weak and cracked nails are very painful and it can be a distraction when you are important things to do.

One common problem that people have when it comes to their nails is the habit of nail biting. This habit is usually developed while they were still young and it got stuck until they grew older. Nail biting children may be acceptable but adults biting on their nails are another thing. So if you are one of those people who are still biting their nails even though they are already old, you should start thinking about stopping this ugly habit.

The only way to stop this bad habit is to decide when to stop it and do it. This problem will not go a way on its own so you should keep a constant effort and resist biting your nails even if you feel the urge to do it. One way to remind yourself is by wearing gloves or putting on nail polish so that you will first think twice instead of subconsciously biting on your nails again.

Aside from this bad habit, there are also other nail problems that people encounter. One is having weak nails. These are often a result of poor nail care habits and a poor diet. Weak nails are hard to take care of as they can crack very easily. Eating healthy foods will help in making these nails stronger and less prone to breaking. One way to further improve the strength of your nails is by dipping them in warm olive oil a few times each week.

Using nail polish is another way to take care of your nails. Aside from making your nails look better, it also serves as an added protection to prevent nails from getting scratched or breaking too easily. Even men can use nail polish especially if their work requires them to deal with a lot of different people.

But applying nail polish should not be done continuously as it also has some negative effects on your nails. Nail polish is made up of chemicals that may potentially weaken your nails if used without resting your nails. Nails may even change color if you do not stop using nails polish from time to time. This is why it is recommended to leave your nails without any polish at least once a week to let them breathe.

Even nail polish remover may have harmful effects on your nails. Acetone based removers usually cause nails to become dry, thus making them brittle and easy to break. The use of nail polish removers should be minimized and hand lotion can be used to help restore moisture in the nails.

With these nail care tips together with your knowledge of basic nail care, you should be able to maintain nice and healthy nails that you would be proud to show off to anyone. You won't have to worry about having cracked and painful nails anymore as long as you practice these good nail habits.
